Astrology for Jan–Feb 2021

Surprises and unexpected events continue to flood the media landscape in 2021. This can be attributed to two forms of conflicting energy in the zodiac during this update period.

Firstly, tension arises from the fact that the ‘rebellious’ sign of Aquarius is hosting a large gathering of very different energies and each is demanding the right to express themselves in their own way (Transiting Sun, Mercury, Jupiter and Saturn). Imagine a dinner party where guests do not get along… While this period can bring creative and innovative thinking (Mercury) that aims to expand ideas and awaken the world to a new future (Jupiter), it can also be a time of separation and possibly loneliness (Saturn) as each of us seeks our own ideals, which are necessarily different from those of the mainstream (Sun).

If you were born under a fixed sign (Taurus, Scorpio, Aquarius, Leo), these transit energies will have more impact, especially when they contact your personal planets. Astrology can provide precise dates for when these transits or events will happen. Being forewarned puts you in a safe and empowered space to transform the friction into a platform for growth.

The second source of ongoing conflict comes from the cyclical relationship of two planets traditionally connected with Aquarius (Saturn, Uranus). These revolutionary energies conjoined in 1988 just before the fall of the Berlin Wall, the release of Nelson Mandela, the breakdown of the Soviet Union and border changes in Europe. In 2021, these planets will be at right angles (90 degrees) on 3 dates. The first encounter (18 Feb) will be an event with revolutionary intentions (Aquarius Saturn square Taurus Uranus).

Personally, there will be friction between the need to remain stable and restrained (Saturn) and the urge to change the world so that it operates as you envision it should (Uranus). You may want to break free of a job, partner, location or belief system that no longer serves you, but the unstable conditions in the outer world make this decision difficult. The next two encounters between these transiting planets (15 June, 24 December) offer a chance to reflect on how your life has unfolded since making the change, and offer an opportunity to integrate and accept the implications of these events into your life.

Another major astrological event of this period concerns interruptions to communications and delays with projects between 31 January and 21 February (Mercury retrograde). If possible, avoid signing contracts or starting new enterprises during this period. Instead, use this time for reflection, rest and restoring your well-being for the year ahead.

Friday 29 January looks like a good day for fun and laughter (Leo Full Moon) with openings for new ideas and interactions (Transiting Sun conjunct Jupiter). The following week, on 2 February, the love planet (Venus) joins the Aquarian dinner party and will intensify or freshen up relationships for people born under an air sign (Libra, Aquarius, Gemini).

Chinese New Year (Aquarius New Moon) on 12 February begins a new cycle for the Ox, a hard-working animal with strength, stamina and resilience. Let’s hope these qualities influence the humans on this planet as we plough into the 2020s.
